Durham Crusaders U13 Rep Winners of the St. Catharines Warriors Tournament
Undefeated and Unforgettable: Durham Crusaders Rule St. Catharines Warriors Tournament!
The U13B Durham Crusaders’ journey at the St. Catharines Warriors Hockey Tournament started with immediate adversity.
Their opening game against the Welland Tigers was a tight, back‑and‑forth battle that ended in a hard‑earned 4–4 tie. Rather than shake the team, it set the tone for their resilience.
Game two brought another demanding matchup, this time against the Prince Edward County Kings. Once again, the Crusaders matched their opponent stride for stride, skating to a 2–2 tie in a game defined by disciplined defense and timely goals.
Then came the tournament’s turning point.
Facing the high‑ranked and heavily favored Highland Storm, the Crusaders delivered a statement win that turned heads across the rink. Playing their most complete game of the tournament, Durham shut down the Storm attack and capitalized on their chances, earning an impressive 3–0 victory and proving they could compete with the best in the field.
Confidence high and momentum rolling, the Crusaders closed out round‑robin play with a strong 4–2 win over the Haldimand River Kings, locking in an undefeated record and a spot in the semifinals.
The semifinals brought a familiar foe — the Prince Edward County Kings — in a game that would decide who moved on to championship Sunday. This time, there would be no tie. The Crusaders played with urgency, speed, and purpose, pulling away late to secure a 4–2 victory and their ticket to the finals.
Waiting for them was the ultimate test: a championship showdown against the Highland Storm, setting up a rematch loaded with intensity.
The final lived up to everything it promised as the third period wound down, the Storm held a 3–2 lead — but the Crusaders weren’t finished. With time running out, Durham dug deep and scored a clutch late goal to tie the game 3–3, sending the championship into overtime.
Three‑on‑three OT was wide open and electric, but despite plenty of chances at both ends, neither team could find the winner.
The tournament would be decided in a shootout.
Highland Storm shot first — and missed.
Durham Crusaders stepped up next — and scored 1–0 Durham.
Highland shot again — and missed once more.
Now the moment of truth.
With the championship on the line, the Crusaders’ shooter came in and fired a shot that banked off the goalie’s blocker, popped straight up into the air, and dropped over the goalie and into the net. Pandemonium erupted.
The U13 Durham Crusaders were champions. Undefeated throughout the St. Catharines Hockey Tournament, battling through ties, delivering upset wins, and finishing with a dramatic shootout victory, the Crusaders proved that heart, teamwork, and belief can overcome any ranking. It was a tournament run that won’t soon be forgotten — and a championship earned the hard way.
