Orono Bryan Bickell Cup Silver Medalists
Tournament #4 this season was a local one-day tournament in Orono. It was an opportunity to reset and go hard to start the second half of the season. It turned out that our two group games were against home teams, as would our eventual final opponent. Eight teams were competing, and the format consisted of two pools of four teams with each team playing two pool opponents with the first placed teams playing in the “A” Championship Final, and with the second placed teams playing the “B” Championship Final, and so on.
GAME 1 v. ORONO LEAFS TEAM 3 [WON 7-3]
Our first game saw us start slowly but gradually work our way into the game. We conceded early when a shot going well wide was deflected by our player into our own goal, but thereafter we stepped on the gas, took a 2-1 lead and then maintained that lead for the rest of the game. The game remained close at 4-3 until the last five minutes when we added three insurance goals. Goals scored by Mellor 2, Siebert 2, Annis, McPherson and Newell, with a goalie assist thrown in for Lawrence.
GAME 2 v. ORONO LEAFS TEAM 4 [WON 4-2]
A much stronger Orono team awaited us in game 2 and made us work hard. A scoreless first period was followed by an early goal in the second period, and a lead heading into the third. Some sloppy plays resulted in us conceding an equalizer then a go-ahead goal midway through the final period. A powerplay line of Mellor, Neath and Siebert were sent out with 2min 30secs remaining knowing that only a win would send the team to the “A” Final, and some driving play resulted in Mellor twice assisting Siebert to give us the lead. An empty net goal by Piette from his own half sealing the victory.
Following Game 2, we made our way to the Lawrence family vineyard to have some pizza, treats and drinks, and it was another chance for the boys to bond together.
“A” CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL v. ORONO LEAFS TEAM 1 [LOST 2-4]
A third slow start to the game resulted in an early tap in from a yard out to give Orono the lead before a shot from the point by Huggard found its way into the bottom corner to level it up. Further sloppy defending saw their player alone again in front of the net to give Orono a second lead before Neath managed to find the top corner. The second period was a tight affair, and we had numerous 2 on 1 attempts that should have resulted in goals, but players were not able to get their heads up and make the passes required. A drop in intensity in the third period meant we lost despite having more than enough chances to take the win. A silver medal and a chance to improve in our next tournament at the Grafton Classic.
